  • Description

President Nixon and Soviet leaders have agreed that failure to reach a new arms limitation accord must not interrupt detente or the planned Soviet-American Summit in Moscow in June.

The determination to go ahead was reported by U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger after a two hour meeting between President Nixon and Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko at the White House on Friday (12 April).

The meeting covered obstacles blocking a new accord at the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks at Geneva and differences in the approach towards a Middle East Settlement.

For the first time Dr. Kissinger openly acknowledged on Friday that the Soviet Union and the United States would fail to draw up a new SALT agreement this year. But the Secretary of State said progress had been made and that in any case the planned Summit would produce other substantial agreements probably in cultural and trade relations -- and in other areas of arms control.
