  • Description

As political violence continues to urn rife in Argentina an executive of the Italian Fiat car company's Argentinian subsidiary was shot dead on Wednesday (29 October). The dead man was identified as Alberto Salas, the company's personnel manager.

The murder took place in the central city of Cordoba and dissident Peronist Montoneros guerrillas have claimed responsibility for the death. Police say Senor Salas was killed as he left his home in Cordoba by four men who had earlier taken over a house across the street after overpowering its occupants.

The Mercedes-Benz motor company has also been the target of the guerrillas. A week ago they abducted Herr Franz Metz, West German Production Manager of the Argentine subsidiary company. Police believe the guerrillas are still holding Herr Metz and they have issued a demand for the re-instatement of 200 dismissed workers from the motor company as one of the conditions to free Herr Metz.

Other workers at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Buenos Aires are out on strike in support of a demand for higher wages. On Wednesday (29 October) they held a noisy demonstration outside the plant and stopped cars driving past to ask people for donations of money on which to live while they are pressing their claims.

With the year's death toll from political violence now over 650, latest reports say that an unidentified right-wing group in Argentina has published a call to arms by all men and women of goodwill to form volunteer brigades for the fight against left-wing guerrillas.
