  • Description

The new regime in Cambodia has begun a week-long series of demonstrations denouncing the former head of state, Prince Sihanouk, and the Vietcong guerillas who have been using the country as a sanctuary.

In Phnom penh yesterday (Sunday) thousands of students surged through the streets carrying banners prepared by the government accusing and threatening the prince and the Communists.

Other students plastered cars with posters depicting the Vietcong trampling underfoot the peasantry of Cambodia. Troops patrolled the streets, but there were no incidents.

The demonstrations are expected to culminate this weekend in the proclamation of Cambodia as a republic. The government has asked provincial leaders to submit petitions with their views on abolishing the kingdom.

Meanwhile, in Peking Prince Sihanouk has pledged that he will soon return to Cambodia to take part in the resistance movement against the men who ousted him last month.

He said the downfall of the new regime was inevitable and its leaders had no future.
