  • Description

ARAB FOREIGN MINISTERS ARRIVED IN CAIRO YESTERDAY (10 MARCH), HOURS AFTER THE SEVERE ARTILLERY BATTLE BETWEEN ISRAELI AND EGYPTIAN FORCES ACROSS THE SUEZ CANAL, FOR A MEETING OF THE ARAB LEAGUE COUNCIL. THEY WERE MEETING TO DISCUSS THE TENSE MIDDLE EAST SITUATION, THE POSITION OF ISRAEL AND SUPPORT FOR THE PALESTINE LIBERATION ORGANISATION.

DELEGATES BEGAN THEIR MEETING BY STANDING FOR ONE MINUTE'S SILENCE IN MEMORY OF LIEUTENANT GENERAL ABDEL MONEIM RIAD, EGYPT'S ARMY CHIEF, WHO WAS KILLED IN THE SUEZ FIGHTING. JORDAN'S FOREIGN MINISTER, ABDEL MONEM AL-RIFAI, CHAIRING THE MEETING, SAID THEY HAD LOST A GREAT HERO AND A GREAT SOLDIER WHO GAVE THE MOST GLORIOUS EXAMPLE OF NATIONALISM AND SACRIFICE.

SECRETARY-GENERAL ABDEL KHALEK HASSOUNA TOLD DELEGATES FROM 13 ARAB NATIONS (THE FOURTEENTH MEMBER STATE, TUNISIA, IS BOYCOTTING THE MEETING) THAT WHILE ISRAEL INCREASED ITS PROVOCATIVE ACTS, THE UNITED NATIONS HAD STILL SHOWN ITSELF UNABLE TO BRING PEACE TO THE AREA.

HE ADDED, WITHOUT ELABORATING, THAT THERE WERE REPORTS OF NEW SUPPLIES OF OFFENSIVE WEAPONS TO ISRAEL. OBSERVERS SAW HIS REMARKS AS A REFERENCE TO RECENT REPORTS THAT THE UNITED STATES AND BRITAIN MIGHT BE PLANNING TO SUPPLY ISRAEL WITH TANKS.

TODAY (11 MARCH) THE MINISTERS MET IN A PRIVATE SESSION COVERING ACTIVITIES OF THE LEAGUE'S POLITICAL COMMITTEE.

MINISTERS DISCUSSED MILITARY FLARE-UPS AND POLITICAL DEVELOPMENTS IN THE MIDDLE EAST AND SOME DELEGATES SUBMITTED CRITICAL RESOLUTIONS ON REPORTS OF UNITED STATES AND BRITISH ARMS DEALS WITH ISRAEL. EGYPTIAN FOREIGN MINISTER MAHMOUD RIAD REPORTED ON HIS LATEST CONTACTS WITH DR. GUNNAR JARRING, UNITED NATIONS PEACE ENVOY TO THE MIDDLE EAST, AND SAID ISRAEL CONSIDERED ITS CONTINUED OCCUPATION OF THE ARAB LANDS SEIZED IN THE JUNE, 1967, WAR AS A FAIT ACCOMPLI.

TONIGHT MEMBERS OF THE LEAGUE AGREED TO HONOUR THEIR FULL FINANCIAL OBLIGATION TO THE PALESTINE LIBERATION ORGANISATION. THIS FOLLOWED A RECENT APPEAL FROM THE ORGANISATION, LED BY MR. YASIR ARAFAT, LEADER OF AL FATAH, FOR MATERIAL SUPPORT TO CONTINUE AND STEP UP ITS CAMPAIGN WITHIN ISRAEL AND THE OCCUPIED TERRITORIES.
