  • Description

THOUSANDS OF TRIBESMEN IN SCATTERED SOUTH VIETNAMESE VILLAGES LIVE IN THE CENTRE OF A DRAWN-OUT WAR THAT SEEMS TO HAVE NO END. IN KONTUM PROVINCE, IN THE CENTRAL HIGHLANDS, HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE OF THE MONTAGNARD TRIBE WERE FORCED TO LEAVE THEIR HOMES RECENTLY WHEN MILITARY ACTIVITIES INCREASED IN THE AREA.

LAST THURSDAY, OVER 200 REFUGEES FROM THE TRIBE MOVED INTO A VILLAGE ABOUT 15 MILES FROM THE TOWN OF KONTUM. THEY HAD MOVED FROM THEIR OWN VILLAGE NEAR THE LAOS BORDER AND BROUGHT VERY LITTLE WITH THEM APART FROM THE CLOTHES THEY WORE.

THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE PROVINCE CHIEF, LIEUTENANT-COLONEL NGUYEN VAN BE, ARRIVED IN THE VILLAGE TO HAND THE TRIBES PEOPLE GIFTS OF CLOTHING AND BEDDING AND TO DISCUSS THEIR PROBLEMS AND NEEDS.

THERE ARE 12 DIFFERENT MONTAGNARD TRIBES IN KONTUM PROVINCE - ALL SPEAKING A DIFFERENT TONGUE. 'MONTAGNARDS', PREDOMINANTLY ROMAN CATHOLIC, ARE SAID TO BE A SIMPLE AND SHY PEOPLE AND WOULD ONLY LEAVE THEIR HOMES UNDER GREAT STRESS.
