  • Description

THE GERMAN GOVERNMENT DECIDED LAST NIGHT (9 MAY) NOT TO REVALUE THE MARK. THE DECISION, ANNOUNCED BY THE DEPUTY GOVERNMENT SPOKESMAN, HERR CONRAD AHLERS, FOLLOWED SEVERAL DAYS OF INTENSE SPECULATIVE BUYING OF WEST GERMAN CURRENCY IN THE HOPE THAT IT WOULD BE REVALUED UPWARDS.

THE DECISION AGAINST REVALUATION WAS TAKEN AT A FOUR-HOUR SPECIAL SESSION OF THE CABINET IN WHICH HERR KARL BLESSING, PRESIDENT OF THE WEST GERMAN FEDERAL BANK, TOOK PART. ALL MINISTERS, EXCEPT DR. ERHARD EPPLER, WERE PRESENT. THE DECISION IS SEEN AS A BLOW TO PROFESSOR KARL SCHILLER, THE SOCIAL DEMOCRAT ECONOMICS MINISTER, WHICH MAY LEAD TO FURTHER TENSION WITHIN THE RULING COALITION OF CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATS AND SOCIAL DEMOCRATS.

THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE DECISION WAS MET WITH SURPRISE AT THE PRESS CONFERENCE GIVEN BY HERR AHLERS:
