  • Description

Thailand's Prime Minister, Thanin Kraivichien, and his Malaysian counterpart, Datuk Hussein Onn, have met for talks in Penang, Malaysia.

SYNOPSIS: The main discussion point was border security. It was Mr. Thanin's first journey abroad as the Thai Prime Minister.

The talks signified a major step in improving relations between the two countries which hit a low ebb in June when Thailand demanded the withdrawal of a 500-strong Malaysian police force from a Thai border town.

The meeting followed another earlier in November, when military leaders decided that their forces would co-operate even further against communist guerrillas in both countries. That decision demonstrated the firm commitment by the new military-backed government in Bangkok to eliminate communist activity along the Thai-Malaysian border. The Malaysian premier told newsmen both countries would work in co-operation in what he called "the eradication of the communist menace".

The Thai leader told newsmen the threat of communist subversion was a problem concerning only Malaysia and Thailand, and could be handled adequately by them.
