Background: IN PARIS TODAY (TUESDAY), REPRESENTATIVES OF SEVEN WESTERN COUNTRIES AND JAPAN MET FOR TALKS ON THE COORDINATION OF AID TO GHANA AND SUPPORT FOR ITS ECONOMY THIS YEAR.

THE TWO-DAY CONFERENCE, ORGANISED BY THE INTERNATIONAL MONETARY FUND (IMF) AT GHANA'S REQUEST, IS BEING ATTENDED BY CANADA, BRITAIN, DENMARK, FRANCE, WEST GERMANY, ITALY, JAPAN AND THE UNITED STATES.

MR. EN OMABOE, CHAIRMAN OF THE ECONOMIC COMMITTEE OF THE GHANA'S RULING NATIONAL LIBERATION COUNCIL, TOLD NEWSMEN BEFORE THE MEETING: "THERE IS A DEFICIT IN OUR BALANCE OF PAYMENTS. WE HOPE AT THE END OF THIS MEETING TO GET SOME AID". BUT HE DECLINED TO SAY HOW MUCH AID GHANA SOUGHT.

HE SAID YESTERDAY'S AGREEMENT WITH FRANCE TO RESCHEDULE NEARLY GBP8-MILLION (STERLING) OF GHANA'S DEBTS AND A SIMILAR AGREEMENT EARLIER THIS YEAR WITH BRITAIN HAD GREATLY CONTRIBUTED TO REACTIVATING GHANA'S ECONOMY.

ALSO TAKING PART IN THE PARIS MEETING WERE REPRESENTATIVES OF THE WORLD BANK AND THE UNITED NATIONS DEVELOPMENT FUND.
