Background: Top tennis amateur Stand Smith -- he's a U.S. Army private -- reached the quarter finals of the Wimbledon tennis championships for the first time in his career today (Saturday). He triumphed over former Wimbledon champion Roy Emerson, the Australian professional, with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, 9-7 victory. It caps a string of impressive wins by Smith over the past 12 months, and justifies his fourth seeding at Wimbledon.

SYNOPSIS: Roy Emerson serving -- and on the receiving end of some superb play by American Stan Smith at Wimbledon on Saturday. Emerson, twice a Wimbledon champion, started well by winning the first set six-two. He lost the next couple six-one, six-three.

Emerson serves again. And the fourth set erupts into some full-blooded action.......

Smith, a U.S. Army Private, was showing the sort of form that has made him the best player outside the professional ranks. This splendid rally gave him two match points.

The crowd warmed to this great display. All the more when Emerson, ten years the senior, went on to save both match points.

Six games later, Smith's lightning return of service again brought him close to victory.

Another match point against Emerson......This time Smith clinches victory, taking the final set nine-seven.
