  • Description

POLICE USED TEARGAS IN PARIS TODAY (MAY 1) TO DISPERSE LEFT-WING DEMONSTRATORS WHO RIOTED DURING A MAY DAY PROCESSION.

TAKING PART IN THE PROCESSION WAS GREEK COMPOSER MIKI THEODORAKIS, RECENT RELEASED FROM PRISON IN GREECE.

AT THE FIRST EVERYTHING WAS PEACEFUL AS THOUSANDS OF FRENCH WORKERS TOOK TO THE STREETS FOR THE TRADITIONAL MAY DAY PROCESSION. THE MARCH WAS ORGANISED BY THE COMMUNIST-LEO C.G.T. UNION GROUP, FRANCE'S BIGGEST.

SHORTLY AFTER THE PROCESSION REACHED THE PLACE DE LA BASTILLE IN THE PART OF PARIS, EXTREME LEFT-WING DEMONSTRATORS BECAME INVOLVED IN VIOLENT CLASHES WITH THE POLICE. IN RETALIATION, THE POLICE MOUNTED BATON CHARGES AND USED TEAR GAS TO QUELL THE RIOTERS.

THE C.G.T. MARCH, BACKED BY SEVERAL OTHER UNION, WAS IN PROTEST AT THE LAW AND ORDER BILL APPROVED OVERWHELMINGLY BY FRANCE'S NATIONAL ASSEMBLY YESTERDAY (THURSDAY), STRENGTHENING THE GOVERNMENT HAD IN DEALING WITH DEMONSTRATION. THE BILL, POPULARLY KNOWN AS THE "ANTI-SMASHER LAW", ANGERED UNION LEADERS, WHO BELIEVE IT IS AIMED DIRECTLY AT THEM.

BUT THE C.G.T. AND ALLIED UNION HAD EXPRESSED FEAR BEFOREHAND THAT EXTREME LEFT-WING FACTIONS MIGHT TRY AND DISRUPT THE PROCESSION. DURING THE CLASHED TODAY WITH THE POLICE, MANY DEMONSTRATORS WERE ARRESTED, AND THERE WERE SEVERAL CASUALTIES.
