  • Description

The new King of Morocco, Hassan II, was invested at a ceremony in Rabat, Mar 3, five days after the sudden death for his father, King Mohammed V.

Sitting on a large golden throne - with the Algerian rebel leader Ferhat Abbas on his right and Prince Moulay Idriss, the late King's brother, on his left - Hassan II gave his first official address as sovereign. He told the assembly of government officials he would continue to pursue his father's policies; pledge himself to defend "the weak against the strong, the poor against the rich"; and appealed to the nation to remain united.

King Hassan also presided over the traditional Friday prayer ceremony, thus marking his accession to the title of "Commander of Faithful" as the country's spiritual leader.

The King's call for unity almost coincided with a communique issued by the National Union of Popular Forces, Morocco's powerful left-wing opposition. The opposition group demanded the election of a national constituent assembly and the formation of a transitional government whose main task would be to organize general elections.
