  • Description

Turkey's Prime Minister, Mr. Nihat Erim, has named eleven people from outside politics in his new 25-men cabinet.

He's chosen ministers from outside the ranks of parliamentarians in an effort to maintain an "above-party" character in his government.

The new cabinet was announced on Saturday (Dec. 11) after a week of political crisis in Turkey.

This followed the resignation of 13 members of the previous cabinet who felt the momentum towards adequate reform programmes in Turkey had been lest.

Following the announcement of the new cabinet, the Prime Minister led the Cabinet to the national mausoleum in Ankara where they paid tribute, and laid a wreath.

SYNOPSIS: Bearing wreaths to the national mausoleum in Turkey on Saturday were the Prime Minister, Mr. Nihat Erim, and members of his newly announced cabinet. The members followed the Prime Minister to the memorial to pay tribute to Turkey's dead before taking up their duties.

Mr. Erim had announced his new government only hours earlier--to and a political crisis that had lasted a week in Turkey. Thirteen members of the earlier cabinet had resigned because they felt the momentum towards reform in Turkey had been lost.

On behalf of his ministers, Mr. Erim signed the national book of condolence.

Mr. Erim's new cabinet includes eleven members who come from outside politics. He's chosen them in an effect to maintain an "above-party" character in the government. The 25-men cabinet has the task of pushing through an extensive reform programme demanded by the country's generals. And with the exception of education, all cabinet posts closely linked with the reform programme have gone to non-politicians.

The announcement of the new cabin ends the third political crisis in Turkey this year.
