  • Description

Algeria celebrated the 20th anniversary of the outbreak of its War of Independence against France with marches and ceremonies through the country on Friday (1 November).

In the capital, Algiers, eleven Heads of State and many foreign delegations joined Algerian President Houari Boumedienne for the highlight of the celebrations - a two-and-a-half hour civil and military parade.

Among the foreign leaders who received the salute of the 8,000 marchers wars king Faisal of Jaudi Arabia, President Anwar Sadat of Egypt, President Habib Bourguiba of Tunesia and Mr Yasser Arafat, leader of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO).

Mauritanian and Tunisian detachments joined the Algerian armed forces for the parade. It was a low-key parade, which included no heavy arms.

In a brief speech welcoming his guests, President Boumedienne said he hoped for an early liberation of Israeli-occupied Arab territories.

SYNOPSIS: Elsewhere in the country, marches and ceremonies were held throughout the day. Festivities in most towns and villages, started a day earlier. Sports meetings, photographic exhibitions and films retracing the steps of the war were staged. Other functions, such as conferences and arts and cultural evenings were organised together with wreath-laying ceremonies to commemorate those who died during the liberation struggle. In some regions, young militants of the National Liberation Front, Algeria's only political party, took part in relays carrying a flame between places where fighting took place during the war of independence.

President Bourguiba of Tunisia was among Boumedienne's gusts at Friday's parade. Tunisian and Mauritanian detachments joined the Algerian Armed Forces in the low-key military march-pst. There were no heavy arms on show.
