Background: A British satellite carrying X-ray research equipment will be launched from Kenya in October and preparations at the launch site are underway.

The launching platform is a converted oil rig off the Kenyan coast selected because of its proximity to the Equator.

The satellite was built in England by the Marconi Space and Defence Systems Division under a two-and-a-half-million sterling (about 5.5. million dollars) contract for the British Science Research Council. It will be launched on an American made Scout racket.

The satellite will carry X-ray equipment for studying emissions from space.
