  • Description

The great soccer star Pele - playing with his Santos team against a French select made up of players from Marseilles and Saint-Etienne - was not his usual self as the Brazilians crashed to a 3-1 defeat following a sudden-death playoff in Paris today (Thursday). Watched by Brigitte Bardot - wearing the French colours and the briefest of hot pants - the match ended in a no-score draw. The play-off than followed, five penalty kicks to each side - France scoring three times, Brazil only once. The match was played in aid of a French cancer fund.
Star of the French side was Salif Keita, from Mali, who were his side's No.10 as he kept Brazil's famous No.10(Pele) under control throughout the game.
Pele - real name Edson Arantes do Nascimento - is 31. He burst on the international football scene in the 1958 World Cup in Sweden, at the age of 17, two years after joining Santos. He has been with the same team ever since - a record in itself - and scored his 1,000th goal just before going to Mexico with Brazil to win the 1971 World Cup. The defeat of the Brazilian team in France - while a moment of great pride to French soccer fans, was also a disappointment to those who had hoped to see the great Pele in top form.
