  • Description

Mr. Tung Pi-Wu, 86-year-old veteran of the Communist Party in the People's Republic of China, has been appointed Acting Head of State, the New China News Agency reported on Thursday (24 February).

Mr Tung's appointment follows the political eclipse of the Head of State Liu Shao-chi, who was stripped of his powers inside and outside Communist Party and dismissed from all his posts in November, 1968.

Mr Tung studied in the Soviet Union during the 1920's and, like Premier Chou En-lai, took part in the epic long march led by Mao Tse-tung in the 1930's.
