    NEARLY 25,000 STRIKING ITALIAN WORKERS AND STUDENTS MARCHED THROUGH THE STREETS OF ROME TODAY (THURSDAY), WAVING RED FLAGS AND BOOING AND HISSING AT POLICE AS THEY CONTINUED PROTESTING AGAINST UNEMPLOYMENT AND A LOW PAY. IN SICILY, FARM WORKERS, FACTORY AND OFFICE WORKERS WERE PROTESTING AGAINST POLICE OVER MONDAY'S CLASH IN WHICH TWO LABOURERS WERE SHOT. THE VICTIMS WERE BURIED YESTERDAY IN THE SICILIAN VILLAGE OF AVOLA, NEAR SYRACUSE.

    THE TWO MEN, GIUSEPPE SCIBILITA, AGED 45, AND ANGELO SIGONA, 25, DIED ON MONDAY WHEN POLICE OPENED FIRE ON ABOUT 600 FARM LABOURERS PROTESTING AGAINST NEGLECT OF THEIR REGION AND DEMANDING BETTER WAGES.

    MORE THAN 20,000 PEOPLE STOOD IN POURING RAIN AS THE TWO MEN WERE BURIED IN THE LOCAL CEMETERY OF THEIR POVERTY-STRICKEN VILLAGE. AMONG THEM WERE GOVERNMENT AND TRADE UNION REPRESENTATIVES.

    DURING THE FUNERAL, POLICE WERE CONFINES TO BARRACKS IN FARMING VILLAGES NEARBY.

    FIVE OTHER FARM WORKERS AND 30 POLICE WERE INJURED IN MONDAY'S CLASH, DURING WHICH POLICE WERE STONED AND TWO CARS SET ON FIRE.
