  • Description

Egyptian authorities have been continuing their investigation into the affairs of the fanatical Moslem sect which has been held responsible for several bombings, and the kidnapping and murder of a former religious affairs minister who opposed them while in office. The Deputy Minister of the Interior, Nabawi Ismail, told parliament on Saturday (16 July) that the sect, which calls itself the Society for Repentance and Flight from Sin, was also involved with other anti-government groups.

SYNOPSIS: Parliament, or the People's Assembly, met to hear Mr Ismail while a military tribunal continued its investigation into the affairs of the Repentance Society. The sect is accused of trying to overthrow the government in a bid to return to a strict Islamic law regime. Mr Ismail told the society had planned to bomb a main square in Cairo, the Egyptian capital. Other anti-government groups supplied the sect with money and cars, he said.

Mr Ismail told the assembly that the Repentance Society had been involved in violence even before the kidnapping and murder earlier this month of former religious minister Hussein Zahabi. Six hundred of its members have since been arrested.
