    ALMOST 200,000 WORKERS IN PRIVATE RAILWAYS AND BUSES THROUGHOUT JAPAN WENT ON A 24-HOUR STRIKE ON APRIL 10, DEMANDING HIGHER WAGES. THE STRIKE HALTED TRAINS ON 183 PRIVATE RAILWAYS AND AFFECTED AN ESTIMATED 21 MILLION PEOPLE WHO WERE EITHER STRANDED OR WENT LATE TO WORK.

    JAPAN NATIONAL RAILWAY AND MUNICIPAL BUSES DID OPERATE IN TOKYO, THE TRANSPORT JAM WAS FURTHER AGGRAVATED BY A FOUR-HOUR STRIKE BY ABOUT 25,000 TAXI DRIVERS. MANY WALKED IN HEAVY RAIN.

    THE STRIKERS ARE DEMANDING A MONTHLY WAGE RISE OF ABOUT 5,000 YEN BUT WERE OFFERED ONLY 1,500 YEN. THE STRIKE WAS ORGANIZED AS A PART OF THE SOHYO TRADE UNION SPRING OFFENSIVE IN WHICH TRUCK DRIVERS, COAL MINERS, DOCK WORKERS, AND OTHERS IS MANY INDUSTRIES WILL ALSO STRIKE. THE TRANSPORT WORKERS WERE REPORTED WILLING TO ACCEPT ANY RISE OVER 3,000 YEN A MONTH.
