    PRESIDENT TSIRANANA RECEIVED A MASSIVE MAJORITY IN THE COUNTRY'S FIRST ELECTIONS HELD BY UNIVERSAL SUFFRAGE. HE FIRST TOOK OFFICE IN 1960 WHEN THE COUNTRY RECEIVED ITS INDEPENDENCE FROM FRANCE. THE GENERAL ELECTION TOOK PLACE AT THE END OF MARCH WHEN PRESIDENT TSIRANANA BASED HIS CAMPAIGN ON THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF HIS GOVERNMENT AND HIS BELIEF THAT THE MALAGASY REPUBLIC MUST CONTINUE TO LEAN HEAVILY ON FRANCE WHICH STILL ABSORBS 50 PER CENT OF THE NATION'S EXPORTS AND SUPPLIES MORE THAN HALF HER IMPORTS.

    FIGURES AVAILABLE FOR THE ELECTION SHOW THAT MORE THAN 90 PERCENT OF THE ELECTORATE VOTED AND 98 PER CENT OF THE VOTES CAST WENT TO PRESIDENT TSIRANANA. THERE WERE TWO OTHER CANDIDATES.

    PRESIDENT TSIRANANA NOW HAS ANOTHER SEVEN-YEAR TERM IN WHICH CONTINUE HIS POLICIES WHICH HAVE WELDED TOGETHER THE ISLAND'S POPULATION OF MORE THAN FIVE AND A HALF MILLION, COMPRISED OF 17 DIFFERENT RACIAL OR TRIBAL GROUPS.
