    DOCTOR WLADISLAW DERING, A FORMER DOCTOR AT THE AUSCHWITZ CONCENTRATION CAMP DURING WORLD WAR TWO, WAS TODAY (WEDNESDAY), AWARDED A HALF-PENNY DAMAGES FOR LIBEL AGAINST THE AUTHOR AND PUBLISHERS OF THE NOVEL "EXODUS", IN THE HIGH COURT.

    THE HALF-PENNY IS THE SMALLEST DENOMINATION OF BRITISH CURRENCY, AND THEREFORE, THE SMALLEST AMOUNT WHICH CAN LEGALLY BE AWARDED AS DAMAGES.

    THE JUDGE ALSO DIRECTED THAT POLISH-BORN DOCTOR DERING, WHO NOW PRACTICES IN LONDON, SHOULD PAY THE DEFENDANTS LEGAL COSTS DURING THE 18-DAY HEARING WHICH ARE ESTIMATED TO HAVE COST BOTH SIDES MORE THAN 20 THOUSAND POUNDS STERLING. HE WAS REFUSED LEAVE TO APPEAL.

    THE 61 YEAR OLD DOCTOR HAD COMPLAINED THAT A PARAGRAPH IN THE BOOK HAD LIBELLED HIM. IT CLAIMED THAT HE HAD ALLEGEDLY PERFORMED 17 THOUSAND EXPERIMENTS IN SURGERY WITHOUT THE USE OF ANAESTHETIC. DOCTOR DERING CONTENDED THAT THE PASSAGE HAD MEANT HE WAS "AN INHUMAN MONSTER" WHO HAD CARRIED OUT EXPERIMENTS IN SURGERY ON PRISONERS WITHOUT ANAESTHETICS.

    AT A PRESS CONFERENCE LATER, MR URIS SAID THAT IN FUTURE EDITIONS OF THE BOOK, PUBLISHED BY KIMBER AND COMPANY, THE OFFENDING PASSAGE WOULD NOT APPEAR, BUT ADDED THAT NO COPIES OF THE BOOK WOULD BE WITHDRAWN.
