    CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER JOHN DIEFENBAKER AND HIS WIFE ARRIVED BY AIR IN TOKYO OCT 27. JAPANESE PRIME MINISTER IKEDA ARRIVED BY, THE CANADIAN AMBASSADOR TO JAPAN (MR. WILLIAM BULL), HIS WIFE AND OTHER OFFICIALS WERE PRESENT AT THE AIRPORT.

    MR. DIEFENBAKER SAID HE HOPED HIS VISIT WOULD STRENGTHEN THE TIES BETWEEN JAPAN AND CANADA; AND POINTED OUT THAT 26,000 CANADIANS OF JAPANESE ORIGIN WERE MAKING VALUABLE CONTRIBUTIONS TO LIFE IN CANADA. THE FINAL PART OF HIS SPEECH WAS IN JAPANESE.

    LATER, HE MADE A COURTESY CALL ON MR. IKEDA AT HIS OFFICIAL RESIDENCE. PRESENT WAS THE FOREIGN MINISTER OF JAPAN, MR. KOSAKA. MR. AND MRS. DIEFENBAKER WERE ALSO RECEIVED IN AUDIENCE BY THE EMPEROR, AND HAD LUNCH AT THE IMPERIAL PALACE. THE MAIN PURPOSE OF MR. DIEFENBAKER'S FIVE-DAY VISIT TO JAPAN WAS TO PROMOTE TRADE RELATIONS.
