    THE SHARPEVILLE MASSACRE OCCURRED ON MARCH 21, 1960, WHEN HUNDREDS OF AFRICANS GATHERED FOR A MASS DEMONSTRATION AGAINST A SOUTH AFRICAN LAW DEMANDING THAT ALL COLOURED RESIDENTS MUST CARRY IDENTITY PASSES.

    POLICE, EQUIPPED WITH ARMOURED CARS AND AUTOMATIC WEAPONS, OPENED FIRE ON THE DEMONSTRATORS. PANIC FOLLOWED -- AND WHEN THE OFFICIAL COUNT WAS MADE, IT WAS FOUND THAT 67 AFRICANS HAD DIED. NEARLY TWO HUNDRED WERE WOUNDED.
