    THE ECONOMIC COMMISSION FOR ASIA AND THE FAR EAST (ECAFE) THIS WEEK BEGAN ITS ANNUAL CONFERENCE TO REVIEW PAST ACHIEVEMENTS AND MAP OUT FUTURE ACTIVITIES IN HASTENING THE REGION'S ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT. THE TWO-WEEK MEETING WHICH OPENED ON TUESDAY, APRIL 14 IS BEING ATTENDED BY CABINET MINISTERS AND SENIOR ECONOMIC EXPERTS FROM ALL 27 MEMBER COUNTRIES OF ECAFE AND THREE OF ITS ASSOCIATE MEMBERS.

    THE CONFERENCE WILL HEAR PROGRESS REPORTS ON SUCH REGIONAL PROJECTS AS THE MEKONG RIVER DEVELOPMENT, THE ASIAN INSTITUTE FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND PLANNING AND THE ASIAN HIGHWAY.

    IT WILL ALSO EXAMINE THE PROGRESS OF THE ASIAN COCONUT COMMUNITY, THE SOUTH EAST ASIAN IRON AND STEEL INSTITUTE TO BE FORMED IN OCTOBER AND WORK ON THE 8,400-MILE TRANS-ASIAN RAILWAY NETWORK.

    AT THE REQUEST OF AUSTRALIA-REPRESENTED IN BANGKOK BY THE MINISTER FOR EXTERNAL AFFAIRS, MR MCMAHON-THE DELEGATES ARE EXPECTED TO ADMIT PAPUA-NEW GUINEA AS AN ASSOCIATE MEMBER OF ECAFE.

    AMONG THE COUNTRIES ATTENDING THE ECAFE CONFERENCE ARE AUSTRALIA, CAMBODIA, TAIWAN, INDIA, INDONESIA, JAPAN, MALAYSIA, NEW ZEALAND, SOUTH KOREA, SOUTH VIETNAM, SINGAPORE, E THAILAND, THE UNITED STATES, BRITAIN, HONG KONG AND BRUNEI.
