    Background: BEIRUT, LEBANON

Lebanon's fragile ceasefire was shattered on November 8 with a new round of savage fighting between Moslem militiamen in West Beirut and Christian and Army units in the East which effectively cut the capital in two. "Green Line" border crossing points were quickly closed as the city was subjected to the sounds of rocket-propelled grenades, rockets and high-velocity bullets. Schools in West Beirut were shut, and many shops and offices could not function because employees were unable to cross over from Christian-dominated East Beirut. Although no one was reported killed in the violent exchanges, local sources indicated that thirty people had been injured. The cause of the new flare-up was not immediately known, but observers speculated that the current Israeli-Lebanese talks aimed at securing an Israeli troop withdrawal from South Lebanon might well have been a contributing factor.
