Background: HONGKONG'S BEST KNOWN FLOATING VILLAGE, MORE THAN 1,500 WOODEN HOUSEBOATS CRAMMED TOGETHER AT THE FISHING PORT OF ABERDEEN, IS DISAPPEARING UNDER THOUSANDS OF TONS OF EARTH AS SOME 11,000 BOAT DWELLERS MOVE INTO NEW HOMES UNDER THE SETTLEMENT'S RESETTLEMENT PROGRAMME. ALREADY MORE THAN 3,500 OF THE VILLAGERS HAVE BEEN MOVED INTO NEW 16 STOREY HILLTOP APARTMENT BLOCKS OVERLOOKING ABERDEEN.

AS EACH BOAT IS EMPTIED AND THE FAMILY OR FAMILIES WHO LIVED IN IT REHOUSED THE BOAT IS BROKEN UP AND MADE INHABITABLE TO PREVENT OTHERS FROM MOVING IN, HOPING THEY TOO WILL BE RESETTLED. THE BOATS VARY IN SIZE FROM 30 FT TO 100 FT (10 TO 30 METRES), AND SOME OF THE BIGGER VESSELS HOUSE 40 TO 50 PEOPLE. BULLDOZERS ARE CARVING AWAY A HILLSIDE TO FILL IN A LONG STRETCH OF STAUNTON CREEK -- SITE OF THE FLOATING VILLAGE -- TO PROVIDE FACTORY SITES.

ANOTHER TWO OR THREE THOUSAND OF THE BOAT DWELLERS WILL BE MOVED INTO RESETTLEMENT APARTMENT BUILDING SOON. A SPOKESMAN FOR THE HONGKONG RESETTLEMENT DEPARTMENT SAID IT WAS HOPED THE PROJECT WOULD BE COMPLETED BY SEPTEMBER OF THIS YEAR. SINCE THE RESETTLEMENT PROGRAMME BEGAN IN 1954 MORE THAN 800,000 PEOPLE HAVE BEEN REHOUSED IN LOW-RENT ACCOMMODATION.
