  • Description

In a brief respite form their tough task guarding over the Middle East ceasefire, men of the Swedish contingent in the United Nations Emergency Force made the most of makeshift Christmas celebrations in the Suez ghost town of Ismailia this week.

On Christmas Eve (December 24), the troops marched to the Catholic church for Christmas Mass celebrated by a Swedish chaplain. Swedish cooks had been brought in to give Christmas meals for the troops a seasonal Scandinavian touch, following complaints about the quality of the food in the past.

Apart from the troops and newsmen, Ismailia -- once a bustling city of 200,000 people -- remains almost empty,
The families of the Swedish soldiers remained in Cairo, where the troops usually spend ten days every month. There, a special party had been arranged for the children of United Nations personnel and other foreign residents.

Meantime, the Israelis claimed one of their soldiers was wounded in the Suez area when the Egyptians opened fire on Christmas day. An Israeli military communique said there had been intermittent exchanges of artillery and small arm???fire in the Suez sector throughout the day.
