  • Description

THE INDONESIAN GOVERNMENT HAS BEGUN A PROGRAMME TO MOVE MORE THAN 15-THOUSAND PEOPLE FROM LOW-LYING AREAS PRONE TO FLOODS. THE MAIN AREA UNDER EVACUATION AT THE MOMENT IS ALONG THE BANDJIR KANAL RIVER IN TJENGKARENG, A DJKARTA SUBURB, WHICH FLOODS CONTINUALLY DURING THE MONSOON SEASON.

THE PEOPLE IN TJENGKARENG HAVE LIVED MOST OF THEIR LIVES IN SLUMS SANDWICHED BETWEEN A RAILWAY LINE AND THE RIVER. HOME WAS LITTLE MORE THAN A WOVEN BAMBOO MAT ON TOP OF SOME BAMBOO STICKS OVER A PATCH OF MUD.

THE GOVERNMENT HAS ORDERED THE SLUM DWELLERS TO DISMANTLE OR DESTROY THEIR OLD HOUSES AND MOVE TO NEW BARRACK-LIKE QUARTERS BUILT ON HIGHER GROUND NEARBY.

THE NEW QUARTERS MAY BE CLEANER AND PROVIDE MORE SHELTER, BUT THE LIVING AREA IS FAR FROM SPACIOUS. EACH FAMILY HAS BEEN ALLOCATED ONE ROOM MEASURING 12 BY 16 FEET.

SO FAR, MORE THAN FIVE-THOUSAND PEOPLE HAVE MOVED FROM THE BANKS OF THE BANDJIR KANAL RIVER, AND THEY'RE BEING ACCOMMODATED IN NEW QUARTERS AS FAST AS THEY CAN BE BUILT. FRESH WATER PUMPS HAVE ALSO BE PROVIDED.
