  • Description

East Germany has presented the Congo with a gifts worth 500 million CFA Francs (more than US $2 million).

SYNOPSIS: The East German plane bearing the gifts arrived at Brazzaville Airport on Wednesday. Consisting mainly of essential medical supplies, the gifts also include bolts of fabrics typewriters and children's goods. The gifts are described as proof of solidarity between the two countries.

The plane was visited on its arrival by representatives of both countries. Mr. Jacob Okandza, the Congolese Minister of Commerce, expressed his Government's appreciation to the East German Ambassador who represented Mr. Erich Honecker, Chairman of the German Democratic Republic's Council of State.

The Congo depends heavily on foreign aid and private investment. During this year, the country has received assurances of aid from France, and an agreement from the Libyan Jamahiriyah to develop Congolese agriculture. It has also signed a cultural agreement with Bulgaria and has welcomed an Iraqi economic delegation to investigate a request by the Congo for development funds.
