    The United States has
    proposed that the United Nations Security Council set a seventh of January
    deadline for the release of American hostages being held in its Teheran Embassy.

    A draft resolution, tabled by the United States calls on the Council to serve
    notice that it will meet again to consider punitive measures against Iran unless
    Secretary General, Kurt Waldheim, is successful in his attempts to have the
    hostages freed by that date. Mr. Waldheim is on his way to Iran in an effort to
    end the crisis.

    SYNOPSIS: The Zambian Ambassador, Mr. paul Firmino Lusaka called the resolution
    inappropriate. He said the Council should wait to see if Mr. Waldheim is
    successful.

    The Nigerian Ambassador, Mr. Akporode clark, also spoke. He has been working to
    produce a united front on the crisis.
