  • Description

CHAOS RETURNED TO ROME UNIVERSITY TODAY (TUESDAY) ONLY A FEW HOURS AFTER IT WAS REOPENED TO STUDENTS. THEY'VE BEEN BARRED FOR THE LAST TWELVE DAYS FOLLOWING VIOLENT DEMONSTRATIONS FOR UNIVERSITY REFORM.

MORE THAN 2,000 STUDENTS MARCHED INTO THE UNIVERSITY COMPOUND, CHANTING SLOGANS AND BRANDISHING PLACARDS ATTACKING THE RECTOR, PROFESSOR PIETRO D'AVACK. IT WAS HE WHO ASKED POLICE TO EJECT THEM FROM THE UNIVERSITY DURING THE SIT-IN DEMONSTRATIONS 12 DAYS AGO.

TODAY, THEY AGAIN BEGAN OCCUPYING ALL THE UNIVERSITY FACULTIES AND BREAKING UP EXAMINATIONS.

LATER ABOUT 5,000 STUDENTS GATHERED ON THE STEPS OUTSIDE THE RECORD'S OFFICE DEMANDING TO BE LET INTO THE MAIN UNIVERSITY HALL. IT WAS LOCKED AND BARRED, AND THEY THREATENED TO SMASH IN THE DOORS IF THEY WERE REFUSED ENTRY.

FINALLY THE DOORS WERE OPENED AND THE STUDENTS WERE ALLOWED TO OCCUPY THE HALL WITHOUT INCIDENT.
