  • Description

Thousands of people lined the streets of London, from Mansion House to the Law Courts on Saturday (11 November) to watch the traditional pageantry and modern carnival that is the Lord Mayor's Show. London's new Lord Mayor, 61 year old Lord Mais, had chosen as this year's theme "The World is our market" ... his way of demonstrating his view that, in entering the Common Market, Britain should not forget the rest of the world.

The parade was the first chance Londoners had of seeing their new Lord Mayor. Lord Mais of Walbrook succeeds Sir Edward Howard.

Twenty-seven gaily decorated floats made up the bulk of the procession, and bands provided plenty of music ... but the highlight was the fairytale golden State Coach which carried the new Lord Mayor.

SYNOPSYS: London in November ... and the traditional Lord Mayor's Show with pomp, pageantry and music....
The retiring Lord Mayor, Sir Edward Howard, takes his leave of Londoners in a parade which has become more than just an opportunity for the people to see their new Lord Mayor. The new Lord Mayor chose as his theme this year "The world is our market," his way of demonstrating his view that, while entering the Common Market, Britain should not forget the rest of the world.

But for the thousands watching, there was no doubt that the highlight was the fairytale Golden State Coach which carried Lord Mais to the Law Courts where he met the Queen's Judges.

Lord Mais of Walbrook is the six-hundred-and-forty-fifth Lord Mayor of London, but he's a director of the Royal Bank of Scotland and of the Lyons group of companies. Discussing this year's show he said he regards Britain's EEC membership, not as a bonus issue, but a rights issue for which Britain has paid too much." However, he added that having taken the decision, Britain must do all she can to succeed.
