  • Description

FOR THREE MONTHS EACH YEAR, THOUSANDS OF BUDDHISTS, HINDUS AND MOSLEMS COME TO CEYLON'S HIGHEST MOUNTAIN, ADAM'S PEAK, ON A SACRED PILGRIMAGE.

BUDDHISTS SAY THE PEAK HAS THE FOOTPRINTS OF THE LORD BUDDHA BUT THE HINDUS BELIEVE IT TO BE THAT OF THE LORD SIVA. THE MOSLEMS SAY IT BELONGS TO PROPHET ADAM, THE FIRST MAN CREATED BY GOD. THE PILGRIMS USUALLY BEGIN THEIR CLIMB UP THE MOUNTAIN AT 8 A.M. AND THEY REACH THE TOP ABOUT NINE HOURS LATER. THE PILGRIMS CONTINUES BETWEEN FEBRUARY AND APRIL.

TWO ROWS OF STEPS -- ONE FOR ASCENT AND ONE FOR DESCENT -- ENSURE THAT THE FLOW OF PILGRIMS IS CONTINUOUS. INDIKATUPANE IS THE POST WHERE BUDDHISTS BELIEVE BUDDHA HIS FOOT. A ROCK HARKS THIS SPOT AND THE PILGRIMS WIND YARDS OF YELLOW CLOTH AROUND THE ROCK.

TO GET TO THE PEAK, THE PILGRIMS FIRST HAVE TO WALK THROUGH THE MAKARA THORANA, THE GATEWAY TO THE MOUNTAIN. THEN THEY PURIFY THEIR BODIES IN SEETHA GANGULA, A RUNNING STREAM NEARBY. AT THE TOP EACH PILGRIM RINGS A BELL TO SHOW HE OR SHE HAS REACHED THE OBJECTIVE.
