  • Description

SCHOOLCHILDREN, MAINLY YOUNG BOYS, TOOK PART IN DEMONSTRATIONS IN ADEN YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) FOR THE FIRST TIME. BUT BY TODAY (SATURDAY) ADEN WAS ITS USUAL BUSTLING SELF AFTER FOUR DAYS OF VIOLENCE, GENERAL STRIKES AND MOURNING FOR THE DEATH OF THREE SONS OF ABDUL QAWEE MACKAWEE, DEPOSED CHIEF MINISTER.

DUE TO RECEIVE INDEPENDENCE FROM BRITAIN NEXT YEAR, ADEN HAD GONE THROUGH SEVERAL DAYS OF UNBROKEN VIOLENCE. BUT IT HAD GRADUALLY DIMINISHED, WITH MORE PEACEFUL DEMONSTRATIONS TAKING THE PLACE OF STREET FIRES AND OTHER DISTURBANCES WHICH HAD OCCUPIED BRITISH TROOPS ALMOST INCESSANTLY.

ARAB ANGER REACHED ITS PEAK LAST MONDAY (FEBRUARY 27) AT THE FUNERAL OF MR. MACKAWEE'S THREE SONS, WHO WERE KILLED IN A BOMB BLAST. MR. MACKAWEE HIMSELF HAS BEEN AWAY FROM ADEN SINCE BEING DISMISSED BY BRITAIN IN 1965 FOR REFUSING TO CONDEMN TERRORISM. HE NOW LIVES IN YEMEN.

TODAY'S ONLY INCIDENT IN ADEN WAS AT CRATER TOWN, WHEN A BRITISH SOLDIER WAS SLIGHTLY INJURED BY A GRENADE THROWN AT A SECURITY PATROL. A UNITED NATIONS MISSION IS EXPECTED TO ARRIVE IN THE PROTECTORATE THIS MONTH.
