  • Description

On the fortieth anniversary of the Russian revolution, Soviet trooped in East Berlin crossed the boundary into the Western sector to lay wreathes at the foot of the Soviet war memorial, a few yards inside the sector.

The Russians, watched by British sentries marched stiffly -and swiftly -to the memorial from the Brandenburg Gate.

The families of Russian officers were also present at the ceremony, but they apart, there was very little interest shown by civilians.

The brief ceremony over, the Russian unit marched stiffly - and swiftly - back to their own zone.
