    EUROPE'S RALLY CHAMPION, RAUNO AALTONEN, OF FINLAND, WAS TONIGHT (THURSDAY) NAMED AS UNOFFICIALLY WINNER OF THE ROYAL AUTOMOBILE CLUB'S INTERNATIONAL RALLY OF GREAT BRITAIN. THE PROVISIONAL PLACINGS WERE GIVEN WHEN THE 63 REMAINING COMPETITORS ARRIVED BACK IN LONDON, FIVE DAYS AFTER THE START OF THE RUGGED 2,350 (3960 KMS) DRIVE THROUGH ENGLAND, SCOTLAND AND WALES.

    PROVISIONALLY PLACED SECOND OVERALL AND WINNER OF THE GRAND TOURING CLASS WAS ANOTHER FINN, TIMO MAKINEN, IN AN AUSTIN-HEALEY 3000. SCANDINAVIANS, IN FACT, SCOOPED THE POOL WITH THIRD PLACE BEING TAKEN BY SWEDEN'S JERRY LARSSON, DRIVING A SAAB, AND ERIK CARLSSON, ALSO DRIVING A SAAB, FOURTH.

    AALTONEN, DRIVING A MINI-COOPER FOR THE B.M.C. TEAM, DESCRIBED THE RALLY AS THE TOUGHEST YET. IT WAS THE FOURTH TIME HE HAS COMPETED AND EXPECTS A BRIEF REST FROM RALLY DRIVING BEFORE TAKING PART IN THE MONTE CARLO RALLY IN JANUARY.

    THE WOMEN'S AWARD SEEMS CERTAIN TO GO TO PAT MOSS-CARLSSON, DRIVING A SAAB, WHO GAINED TENTH PLACE IN THE OVERALL LISTING.
