  • Description

Europe's biggest cinema circus--the Cannes Film Festival--opened for the 26th time on Thursday (May 4) before the now traditional array of film and business world personalities.

Before it ends on May 19 about 400 films will have been screened, with first on the list, a French film, "L'aventure, c'est l'aventure," by French director Claude Lelouch, who won the Festival's Grand Prix award in 1966, with "A Man and a Woman".

The festival--commercially by far the most important event in the international film calendar--was officially opened by the French Minister of Culture, Jacques Duhamel.

Visnews cameraman Hubert Piernet was among the crowd at the Festival building for the inauguration.
