  • Description

More than 40 of American's top drivers were in Atlanta, Georgia on Sunday for the annual Atlanta 500 car race. The latest model saloon cars, all capable of more than 120 miles an hour lined up for the start. A. J. Foyt, one of the evergreen names in American car racing was entered....he was driving a 1960 Mercury. It was the twelfth year of the event and proved one of the most exciting. Cars dropped out with blown tyres and engines and at one stage it looked as though Foyt wouldn't see the end. However fast work on his car saw the "old man" take the lead in the last lap and win by less than two seconds. Second was Richard Petty in a 1971 Plymouth and third Pete Hamilton.
