  • Description

The 1971 International Himalayan Expedition set out from Katmandu yesterday (28 February), aiming to conquer Everest by two of the most difficult and previously unscaled routes.

Leading the 31-member team, drawn from 13 countries, is Swiss-born American Norman Dyhrenfurth, who lives in Austria. The party includes Yvette Vaucher, from Switzerland, who could be the first woman to scale Everest.

If the assault on Everest is successful, the climbers should reach the 29,028-ft (8,880 metre) peak early in May.

Countries represented in the team are Australia, Austria, Britain, France, West Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Nepal, Norway, Poland, Switzerland and the United States.
