Background: Visnews filmed Feb 4 at Southampton, the Orient Explorer, a mobile oil drilling platform which will be towed to British Borneo later this month. It is the first to be built in Britain.
It is fitted with a helicopter landing stage and has four legs which can be lowered for drilling into the bed of the South China Sea. It will be towed through the Suez canal on its 9,200-mile voyage to Borneo.
The Orient Explorer (5 1/2 thousand tons) is designed by an American firm - the De Long Corporation - and built by Steel Structures, an associate of the British John Howard Group of engineering companies at a cost of GBP1M. It will be hired to the Brunei Shell Petroleum Company.
