THESE ADOPTIONS WERE ORGANISED BY THE KUAN LIN FOUNDATION WHICH WAS STARTED THREE YEARS AGE BY BURLINGTON DOCTOR, ROBERT FERRIE, AND HIS WIFE, HELKE.

MRS.FERRIE: ANYONE WHO HAS ADOPTED AN OLDER CHILD, ESPECIALLY A HANDICAPPED CHILD, WILL KNOW WHAT TREMENDOUS JOY IT IS TO SEE THEM...TO SEE THEM MATURE AND BECOME HAPPY, LEAD A FULFILLED LIFE.

REPORTER: WHY DO YOU STRESS THE HANDICAPPED ASPECT? WHY ARE THE FIT ONES NOT TO BE ...

MRS.FERRIE: OH, THE FIT ONES ARE BEING ADOPTED, THERE'S A LOT OF ADOPTION GOING ON IN CERTAIN STATES IN INDIA. THE BABIES... ESPECIALLY THE BABIES, ARE GOING OUT OF INDIA IN A MATTER OF WEEKS, FROM THE TIME OF APPLICATION TO THE TIME OF DEPARTURE. BUT THE OLDER CHILDREN AND THE HANDICAPPED CHILDREN ARE THE ONES THAT ARE FORGOTTEN.

REPORTER: INTERNATIONAL ADOPTION IS A TRICKY BUSINESS TIED INTO EASTERN CUSTOMS AND RELIGION. INDIA, FOR INSTANCE, TAKES MONTHS TO CLEAR EACH CHILD. BANGLADESH, SAYS MRS. FERRIE, HAS NOW CLOSED THE DOOR ON CHILDREN BEING ADOPTED AWAY. BUT STILL, FOR THOSE WHO DO MAKE IT, THEY HAVE BEEN PLUCKED FROM THE JAWS OF ALMOST CERTAIN DEATH, AND IN THEIR COMING ALMOST CERTAINLY ADD A NEW SENSE OF PRIDE AND JOB IN THOSE WHO TAKE THEM IN. IT'S A NEW LIFE FOR BOTH CHILD AND PARENTS.

Background: UNDER AN ADOPTION SCHEME ORGANISED BY THE KUAN LIN FOUNDATION, ORPHANS FROM INDIA ARE BEING FLOWN TO CANADA TO BE ADOPTED BY CANADIAN FAMILIES. THE ORPHANS ARE USUALLY OLDER CHILDREN WHO ARE IN SOME WAY HANDICAPPED.

THE FOUNDATION WAS ESTABLISHED THREE YEARS AGO BY DR. ROBERT FERRIE AND HIS WIFE, HELKE, OF BURLINGTON, CANADA. ON THURSDAY (28 NOVEMBER) SOME OF THE FIRST ORPHANS TO BENEFIT FROM THE SCHEME FLEW INTO TORONTO AIRPORT, TO BE GREETED BY THEIR NEW PARENTS. THEIR NAMES WERE MICHAEL (AGED TEN), HEINA (AGED NINE), MURPHY (AGED EIGHT) AND CLARE-MICHEL (AGED TWELVE).

ALL FOUR CHILDREN ARE SLIGHTLY HANDICAPPED, MOST OF THEM HAVING SUFFERED FROM THE AFTER-EFFECTS OF POLIO. THEY HAD BEEN GIVEN THEIR NAMES BY THE NUNS WORKING IN THE ORPHANAGES IN BOMBAY WHERE THEY HAD BEEN CARED FOR.

OTHER CHILDREN IN THIS FIRST BATCH WERE TO FLY ON TO TWO OTHER CANADIAN TOWNS, WINNIPEG AND DEEP RIVER, WHERE OTHER ADOPTIVE PARENTS WERE WAITING TO GREET THEM.

IT COSTS THE FOUNDATION ABOUT EIGHT HUNDRED DOLLARS TO PROVIDE EACH ORPHAN WITH A NEW HOME. THE MONEY COVERS THE COMBINED COSTS OF THE LEGAL ADOPTION PROCESS THROUGH THE INDIAN COURTS, AND THE AIR FARE TO FLY THE CHILDREN TO CANADA. FOR EACH CHILD THE WHOLE OPERATION TAKES SEVERAL MONTHS, BEING COMPLICATED BY EASTERN CUSTOMS AND RELIGION.

SYNOPSIS: UNDER AN ADOPTION SCHEME ORGANISED BY THE KUAN LIN FOUNDATION, HANDICAPPED INDIAN ORPHANS ARE BEING ADOPTED BY CANADIAN FAMILIS. THESE FOUR YOUNGSTERS ARRIVING AT TORONTO'S INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, ARE AMONG THE FIRST TO BENEFIT FROM THE SCHEME. TWO OTHER SETS OF PARENTS WERE WAITING IN WINNIPEG AND DEEP RIVER FOR TWO OTHER CHILDREN TO ARRIVE. THE PARENTS WERE SEEING THEIR ADOPTED KIDS FOR THE FIRST TIME. FOR EACH CHILD THE WHOLE OPERATION COSTS ABOUT EIGHT HUNDRED DOLLARS, INCLUDING COURT COSTS AND AIR FARE. CBC REPORTER, JEFF HUSSEY, TAKES UP THE STORY.
