SYNOPSIS: The glow from a huge blaze in Brooklyn, New York, could be seen for miles after an abandoned factory building was reduced to a pile of rubble by an explosion and fire. So fierce was the fire, which erupted just before dawn, that the flames quickly spread to tenement buildings next to the factory. Inside were more than one-hundred-and-fifty sleeping people. A bus, passing the factory at the time of the explosion, was rocked by a collapsing fire escape. Ten passengers and the driver fled through emergency hatches - but all were injured. Firemen then had to search for a missing family in the rubble.

At first, the firemen had to dig through the rubble with bare hands, but they found the family. In all twenty-eight people were injured, but reporters say the figure would undoubtedly have been much higher but for some daring rescues by the police and firemen.

Firemen eventually called in heavy earth moving machinery and cranes to speed up rescue operations. The Red Cross reported that the one-hundred-and-fifty people living in the nearby tenements had been left homeless. Police suspect arson.
