Soccer .. and Brazil's Carioca Championship was decided in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday (3 December) amid typical scenes of South American football fever. Flamengo took the prestigious championship with a 1-0 win over Vasco.

SYNOPSIS: Vasco, playing in the black and white strip, where pre-match favourites. A capacity crowd of a hundred and thirty thousand turned out for the game and ground officials were particularly happy as they netted approximately three hundred and thirty thousand U.S. dollars from the turnstiles.

The match was hard-fought. A promising Flamengo attack through Zico is ended here by Vasco's Gaucho.

Making remained tight throughout the first half. On this occasion Vasco's Antonio is fouled by Cleber of Flamengo. At half time the score remained nil all.

The second spell began just as hard as the first. Here Cleber is brought down heavily just outside Vasco's penalty area and needs to be carried from the field.

The match was also being billed as a contest between the opposing managers of the two sides. Soccer experts were keen to see the tactics Claudio Coutinho of Flamengo would use Against Vasco managed by the older and more experienced Orlando Fantoni.

Midway through the second spell Flamengo mounted a series of pressurised attacks, narrowly failing to score here.

With just three minutes to go Flamengo take a corner and Rondineli snaps up the chance to head the ball into Vasco's net for what became the winning goal.

It was the goal that was to be cherished by the Flamengo fans who claimed their sides had been repeatedly fouled by Vasco.

Armed troops moved on to the field quickly to separate several hundred fans, including women, who began fighting on the pitch.
