    IN THE WOMEN'S LONG JUMP, 28-YEAR-OLD VIORICA VISCOPOLEANU OF RUMANIA WON THE WINNING GOLD MEDAL, HER DISTANCE OF 6.82 METRES (22 FEET, 4 1/2 INCHES) BETTERED THE OFFICIAL OLYMPIC AND WORLD RECORDS OF 6.76 METRES (22 FEET, 2 1/4 INCHES) SET BY BRITAIN'S MARY RAND IN 1964.

    BRITAIN WON THE SILVER MEDAL WHEN SHEILA SHERWOOD CAME IN SECOND WITH A JUMP OF 6.68 METRES (21 FEET, 11 INCHES).

    TATIANA TALYSHEVA'S JUMP OF 6.66 METRES (21 FEET, 10 1/4 INCHES) WON THE SOVIET UNION A BRONZE MEDAL.

    THE UNITED STATES WON FIRST AND THIRD PLACES IN THE MEN'S 100-METRE FINAL WHEN NEGRO RUNNER JIM HINES BROKE WORLD AND OLYMPIC RECORDS. FINISHING IN A TIME OF 9.9 SECONDS. PREVIOUSLY, THE RECORD HAD BEEN 10.0 SECONDS. THE 22-YEAR-OLD HINES FROM OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA, PICKED UP SPEED FROM HIS RAPID START AND WAS ABLE TO KEEP AHEAD OF THE OTHER COMPETITORS THROUGHOUT THE RACE.

    22-YEAR-OLD LENNOX MILLER OF JAMAICA WON THE SILVER MEDAL WITH A TIME OF 10.0 SECONDS.

    THE U.S.'s BRONZE MEDAL IN THE EVENT WAS WON BY CHARLES GREENE, WHOSE FINISHING TIME WAS 10.0 SECONDS.

    VLADIMIR GOLUBNICHITY OF THE SOVIET UNION WON THE 20-KILOMETRE WALK WITH A FINISHING TIME OF 1 HOUR, 33 MINUTES AND 58.4 SECONDS. HE DEFEATED MEXICAN IDOL JUAN PEDRAZA BY A FEW METRES. THE MEXICAN TOOK SECOND PLACE WITH A TIME OF 1 HOUR AND 34 MINUTES, THE RUSSIAN ENTERED THE STADIUM FIRST, CLOSELY FOLLOWED BY HIS TEAMMATE, NIKOLAI SMAGA, WITH PEDRAZA A FEW METRES BEHIND.

    PEDRAZA OVERTOOK SMAGA ON THE BACK STRAIGHT OF THE LAST LAP INSIDE THE STADIUM WHILE THE CROWD CHEERED EXCITEDLY. HE FINISHED AHEAD OF SMAGA, WHO WON THE BRONZE MEDAL FOR THE SOVIET UNION WITH A TIME OF 1 HOUR, 34 MINUTES AND 3.4 SECONDS.
