  • Description

A LARGE GROWN GATHERED IN ST. JOHN'S SQUARE IN ROME YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) TO ATTEND A MASS RALLY ORGANISED BY ITALY'S COMMUNIST PARTY. THE RALLY WAS CALLED TO REVIEW THE POLITICAL CRISIS IN ITALY SINCE THE RESIGNATION A WEEK AGO OF THE PRIME MINISTER, MR ALDO MORO AND HIS CABINET.

MANY OF THE CROWD CARRIED POSTERS AND PLACARDS EXPRESSING SUPPORT FOR THE COMMUNIST LEADERS. THE MAIN SPEAKER AT THE RALLY WAS THE LEADER OF THE ITALIAN COMMUNIST PARTY, MR PALMIRO TOGLIATTI.

(MEANWHILE THE ITALIAN PRESIDENT, ANTONIO SEGNI HAS ASKED MR ALDO MORO TO FORM A NEW CENTRE-LEFT COALITION GOVERNMENT. MR MORO HAS MADE IT CLEAR HE WILL TRY TO MODEL HIS NEW GOVERNMENT ON HIS LAST -- A COALITION OF CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATS, SOCIAL DEMOCRATS, SOCIALISTS AND REPUBLICANS. HE SAID LAST NIGHT HE WAS CONVINCED THAT THE DEMOCRATIC PARTIES CALLED UPON TO FORM A MAJORITY GOVERNMENT WOULD ASSUME ALL THE RESPONSIBILITIES WHICH THE SITUATION "SO IMPERATIVELY" DEMANDS.)
