  • Description

At least 27 people were killed when a passenger express collided head-on with a good train and burst into flames at Lebus in East Germany on Monday (27 June).

SYNOPSIS: The express ploughed into the stationary goods train near Lebus station. Soviet soldiers and East German railway engineers moved in with heavy lifting equipment to clear the tangled wreckage after the worst rail crash in the country for 10 years. Local residents said the express, travelling from Zittau in the southeast to Stralsund on the Baltic, may have been wrongly switched front he main line onto a minor track.

The steam engine pulling the passenger train and the goods trains diesel locomotive were both gutted in the ensuing fire. Smouldering wreckages still blocked the track 12 hours later. Both crewmen in the steam locomotive were said to have been killed, as was the driver's assistant in the goods train. The driver was found alive, but unconscious, near the wreckage. He had apparently jumped clear at the last minute.
