  • Description

The first doctorate degrees of medicine given in Cameroon were awarded to graduates at Yaounde University last week (19 September).

Twenty nine graduates received their doctorates from the Director of the University's Centre for Health Sciences, Dr, G.L.Monekosso.

Dr.Monekosso told the new doctors that their graduation was not an end to their studies, but only a beginning.

He said that the graduation ceremony was the culmination of six years of hard work, not only by the new doctors but by their teachers and public and government officials, who put so much time and money into the formation of the Centre.

The Centre of Health Sciences was founded at Yaounde University in September 1969.

It was set up under the auspices of the United Nations' Development Programme and the World Health Organisation.

Many countries throughout the world contributed to the centre, including Britain, France, Canada and the United States.

Dr.Monekosso said the new graduates should dedicate themselves to safeguarding the health of the Cameroonian nation.
