    AFTER POSING FOR PRESS PHOTOGRAPHERS, 65-YEAR-OLD NGUYEN, A GRADUATE FROM THE PARIS UNIVERSITY, SAID THAT HE WAS NEVER INTERESTED IN POLITICS.

    ON RETIREMENT 23 YEARS AGO, HE RETURNED TO HIS VILLAGE IN THE KIEN HOA PROVINCE AND LIVED AS A HERMIT MEDITATING ON THE BUDDHIST RELIGION, WHEN HE WAS ARRESTED.

    THE MILITARY REVOLUTIONARY COMMITTEE WHO RELEASED HIM FROM JAIL A FEW DAYS AFTER THE LIGHTING COUP D'ETAT, HAS ALSO GRANTED HIM A PASSPORT TO GO TO JAPAN TO FURTHER HIS KNOWLEDGE ON BUDDHISM.
