  • Description

Two persons were killed and at least 70 others were injured, many seriously, when a terrorist bomb exploded in a government building in the city of Sapporo on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido, on Tuesday ( 2 March).

The explosion, believed to have been caused by a time bomb, ripped through the first floor of the Hokkaido prefectural government building shortly after 9 AM, Japan time. (0003 GMT)
The blast smashed windows sending glass pellets hurtling through the air like bullets.

After the explosion police searched through the shattered glass and blood stained debris in an attempt to find a clue to the origins of the bomb.

The two people killed in the incident were identified as employees of the prefectural government. Police said they believed the two were waiting for the lift on the first floor and received the full impact of the explosion. the bomb, believed to have been made with chloric acid, was near the elevator.

Police later discovered a note by the East-Asia Anti-Japanese Armed Front claiming responsibility for the bombing.

The same organisation also claimed responsibility for another explosion eight months ago in Sapporo. The bomb exploded in a corridor of the Hokkaido police headquarters, next to the building where Tuesday's blast occurred.
