  • Description

A Presidential decree dissolved Italy's parliament on Monday (28 Feb) A general election will now take place one year before the end of parliament's five-year term -- the first premature general election in the 26-year history of the Italian Republic.

Following Saturday (26 Feb) night's Senate confidence debate defeat of the nine day Christian Democrat Government, headed by Premier Giulio Andreotti, President Giovanni Leone summoned the Presidents of the two parliamentary chambers -- Senator Amintore Fanfani and Signor Alessandro Pertini -- to Quirinal Palace for consultations. On Monday morning, Signor Andreotti called on President Leone to officially dissolve parliament.

The current political crisis centred mainly around an anti-divorce referendum, regarded by most Italian politicians as always likely to cause a national split along religious lines. Unable to agree on how to avoid the referendum, the Pormer four-party centre-left coalition headed by ex-Premier Emilio Colombo resigned on January 15, ending nearly a decade of centre-loft rule in Italy. all efforts to revive the coalition failed and the Christian Democrats formed a minority Government aimed at running the election campaign as a caretaker cabinet. The Christian Democrat cabinet was defeated by 158 votes to 151 in a Senate confidence debate, and Italy now faces general elections -- tentatively scheduled for May 7.
